Advocacy

The American Alliance of Museums works to unite the country’s museums from art museums to zoos. The Alliance helps museums tell our story and promotes a deeper understanding of museums with policymakers, the press and the public.

Museums Urged to Sign Fieldwide Letter to Congress; AAM and national advocacy partners lead effort to mobilize museums in support of key federal agencies

As part of our ongoing effort to protect funding for key federal agencies that support museums, we are asking museums and related organizations to sign on to a fieldwide letter to Congress and learn more in our latest Alliance Advocacy Alert. Join the letter by Friday, July 21.

Use #museumsadvocacy and #SpeakUpforMuseums to join the cause on social media.

Funding Again Advances in Congress; 750 Museums Sign Fieldwide Letter So Far

On July 19, the House Appropriations Committee approved a bill that would provide $231 million for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). This development came just one day after the committee approved $145 million for the National Endowment for the Arts and $145 million for the National Endowment for the Humanities—directly contradicting President Trump’s FY18 budget proposal to eliminate these agencies.

Over 750 museums and related organizations have already signed our fieldwide letter to Congress. Has yours?

Make the Case for Museums: Invite Congress to Visit Your Museum

Now in its sixth year, “Invite Congress to Visit Your Museum” Week 2017 is set for August 12-19. The stakes for museums and the federal programs that support them have never been higher, and there’s no more powerful way to help elected officials and their staff understand what museums do than by inviting them in to see for themselves.

Use our step-by-step guide to get started today!
